Johnrell S. Zuniega, university research associate, and Dr. Elda B. Esguerra, director of the Postharvest Horticulture Training and Research Center (PHTRC), bagged the 2019 Philippine Agriculture and Resources Research Foundation, Inc. (PARRFI) Research and Development (R&D) Award (Research Category). The award was given by the Los Banos Science Community Foundation, Inc. during the 11th Syensaya R&D Awards closing program at the Baker Hall, UPLB last August 30. Zuniega and Dr. Esguerra’s winning entry titled, “Extending the Storage Life of Fresh Turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) Rhizomes through Light and Temperature Manipulation” was cited for providing basic information about the physiological and physico-chemical changes in fresh turmeric, including the total phenolic content and antioxidant activities in the rhizomes during storage at ambient conditions as affected by light and temperature. The area planted to turmeric throughout the country has been expanded because of its widely promoted nutraceutical properties and the public’s increased health and wellness concerns. However, turmeric rhizomes also deteriorate after harvest, resulting in drying, sprouting, decay and loss of its antioxidant properties. For good quality rhizomes with high intensity of yellow-orange color, high phenolic content and antioxidant activity, Zuniega and Esguerra recommend the use of jute sack as cover or packaging material. Turmeric can be stored longer at low temperature with protection from light. (MV Maunahan)
